Daena (she/they) of Holistic Abortions and the Red Hook Collective was born into a long line of German farmers and English artists, entrepreneurs and cooks along the Mississippi river on the tribal lands of the Kiikaapoi, Sauk, Peoria and Ho-Chunk people. Family traditions of healing through food and the land were shared, cultivated, and adapted. Growing up queer and neurodivergent in middle America left them lots of time to connect with the plants and animals of the farming community around them.
Daena studied Social Justice Movements and Latin American politics at the University of Minnesota and graduated with a Human Relations degree. After receiving the degree she moved to Nicaragua to have a more embodied experience of the education she received. It was in these years she first was introduced to Indigenous plant medicines for deep healing. Since then they have studied folk and clinical herbalism in bio-regions throughout the United States including the Colorado School of Clinical Herbalism, The Vitalist School of Herbology, Green Medicine Herb School, and many single classes with amazing community herbalists. She is deeply grateful for abortion trainings and allyship with Molly Dutton-Kenny as well as the amazing Birthing Advocacy Doula Trainings.
