~ Spring Guest Workshop ~

Dandelion, nettles, grape hyacinth!  Come join us as we tune into the medicine of Spring, and learn how to infuse color onto cloth.  This afternoon natural dye workshop with Maggie Ruth Haaland will teach an introduction to natural dyeing, including the mordanting process, harvesting local plants for color, and natural dye as self care and ritual.  We will take a short walk to see what we can find to gather, and then come back to the studio to stir the dye pot, and get our hands going.  Each participant will leave with an ecoprinted organic cotton bandana, and folks are also welcome to bring one small item from home to be dyed during class in a collective dye pot.  We will also drink a seasonal tea, and share reflections on our experiences (if you feel called).  A slow, creative time together as we bask in the beauty of mid-spring.

Note: this class falls on mother’s day.  It could be a wonderful way to nourish your heart either solo, with a dear friend, or with a person who offers mothering love to you.

About Maggie:

Maggie Ruth Haaland (she/they) is a queer natural dyer, herbalist, writer and footbath devotee living in Jamaica Plain, MA.  She has studied plant medicine for ten years, and has over the past number of years fallen in love with the intersection of fiber and herbal medicine.  Their values are rooted in softness, community and care and she facilitates natural dye workshops and introductory plant walks to help folks connect in to themselves, their creativity and the land around them.  Maggie also vends at various markets in the Boston area, offering naturally dyed bandanas, thrifted tee shirts, herbal salves, and flower essences.  Their work is slow, seasonal and humorous, and informed by their experience of living with chronic illness and a brain that moves in many directions. When she doesn’t haven’t her hands in a dye pot, she’s walking a dog, pond swimming, or listening to Anais Mitchell in bed as she soaks feet and stitches strange magic into her friend’s clothes.

Some of her wonderful teachers include Steph Zabel, Jade Allicandro Mace, Bryonie Wise and Tony Lemos, as well as the plants who grow wild and in gardens around New England.
