Botanical Dye @ MXED GREENS

Bundle Dye + Fresh Nettle Vat

Sunday May 26th 3-5:30pm
at the *new* MXED GREENS space, Paragon Arts and Industry Building (150 Pleasant St, Easthampton MA). Studio #213, second floor

In our first dye workshop of the year, we'll focus both on bundle dyeing and vat dyeing. We love bundle dyeing as a time to slow down and drop in to the ritual practice of dyeing with whole fresh or dried plants. Plus, this year we finally have a large enough nettle patch to bring you fresh nettle dye!

Of course, we'll share about the chemistry that gets natural colors to stick to fabrics, and we'll also spend time exploring the history and ecosystems of bioregional dye plants, allowing space for reflections and stories from workshop participants as we collectively build our relationships with these plants and the beauty of color and transformation.

What we'll cover:

  • fabric options + mordants
  • local plants that can be used for dyeing
  • dye techniques of bundle dyeing
  • plant dye color modifiers

Materials provided:

  • 1 silk bandana / scarf for you to bundle dye
  • 1 silk swatch for you to dye with nettles
  • dye plants + all supplies for bundle dyeing
  • handout with information from the workshop so you can continue experimenting with natural dyes at home! (you can definitely bring your own notebook to write down info too)

Cost: $40-60 Sliding Scale (the slightly higher price than the previous dye workshops reflects the additional materials for the nettle dye!)

Not sure where to pay on the scale? Review our sliding scale system here.

Access notes:
Workshop is limited to 12 participants, with advance registration required. As with all the indoor events we host, KN95, N95, or equivalent respirator masks are required while inside the studio for all participants - we have some at the door if you need one. The studio has non-fluorescent overhead lighting, HEPA air purifiers running, and a variety of seating options. Full access notes for the Paragon Building and our studio can be found HERE.
